LMS vs AI video platform: a decision guide for L&D leaders

An LMS and an AI video platform aren't competing for the same job: the LMS distributes and records training, while the video platform produces and maintains the content. The decision usually isn't which one to pick, but which layer you're missing.
If you're comparing training tools, chances are you've dropped an LMS and an AI video platform into the same spreadsheet, as if they were mutually exclusive options. It's an understandable mix-up: both sit under the "training software" label and both come out of the same budget. But looked at closely, they tend to solve different problems: one makes sure training reaches people and gets recorded; the other makes sure that content exists, stays current, and is actually worth watching. Treating them as interchangeable is a fast way to buy the wrong tool.

The distinction matters because each layer is bought for a different reason. The LMS justifies itself to an auditor: it's there to prove training happened. This is the parent question. If your pain is "I can't get people to take the courses, I don't know who completed them, I can't certify," your gap is distribution: you need an LMS, or to get more out of the one you already have.
If your pain is "people log in, click through, and learn nothing," the LMS won't fix it. There the gap is content, and that's where a video production platform comes in.
If your training is stable for years, production cost gets amortized and almost any format holds up. But if you work with operational procedures, regulation, or product training, content ages fast.

The good news for anyone who's already invested in an LMS is that the decision isn't exclusive at a technical level. A training-focused AI video platform exports its modules in SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, and xAPI, the standards any LMS understands. The video is produced and maintained in the content platform, and published to the LMS as one more package.
It's worth reading the fine print, because it's a decision criterion that often goes unnoticed: not every platform includes SCORM export on all its plans — in some it's a feature reserved for the Enterprise tier. In most cases, it shouldn't. An AI video platform produces and maintains content, but it doesn't manage enrollments, permissions, or certifications at scale the way an LMS does. For very small teams with minimal recording needs, a content platform with basic sharing features may be enough; in organizations with mandatory training and audits, the LMS is still needed for completion tracking.
It depends on what you want to measure. SCORM records whether a course was started and completed, and is the minimum standard for compliance. xAPI (Tin Can) records behavior inside the content: interactions, sections reviewed, assessment results.
